What is SPOTLIGHT?
Many people ask us, “So, what IS Spotlight? Is it a CEPA or Jefferson State Community College program?” The answer is both!
Spotlight was first conceived in 2016 by CEPA Executive Director Jeff Thompson and Jefferson State Associate Dean Dr. Nicholas Kin. Their idea was to form a collaborative program with the goal of providing the students and adults of St. Clair County with easily accessible and frequent opportunities to participate in the dramatic arts together.
Soon after developing their concept, professional actor and director Lesley Warren was hired to lead the program. In the two years since its inception, Spotlight has quadrupled local participation to more than 250, added three theater classes to JSCC course offerings, and assisted in the formation of five new drama clubs in St. Clair County!
Our current Spotlight Program Coordinator, Shelby Maddox, is no stranger to the CEPA stage and is excited to further establish the Spotlight Program. She feels it is extremely important to grow and develop the theatre community in St. Clair County.

In addition to providing opportunities for people across the county and of all ages to perform in and work on productions, Spotlight strives to offer the residents of St. Clair County with quality plays and musicals to attend as audience members. Past productions include Bus Stop, Harvey, Four Weddings and an Elvis, The Curious Savage, Miracle on 34th Street, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and A Christmas Carol. We are looking forward to the rest of our 2020/2021 year with Spotlight.
Spotlight is supported by The City of Pell City, The Pell City School System, The Alabama State Council on the Arts, Trussel, Funderburg, Rea, Bell, and Furgerson, and Hargray. Further support through donations and endowments ensures the continuation of this vital program.
There are so many ways to get involved, and we would love your help in growing this amazing program. Please email Shelby Maddox at [email protected] to learn more.
