The Great Gatsby adapted by Gary Peterson, Oct 23 & 24

Moody High School Spotlight is jazzing things up this fall with this roaring adaptation of The Great Gatsby. It beautifully captures the glamour of the Roaring 20s and all the iconic moments of the beloved American classic. Adapted by Gary Peterson, this is an event you won’t want to miss!

A self-made millionaire, Jay Gatsby’s desire for wealth, popularity, and power in the Jazz Age hides a deeper passion:  his love for Daisy, the woman he met and fell for years ago, but who has since married wealthy, hulking Tom Buchanan.  When Daisy’s cousin, Nick Carraway, happens to become Gatsby’s unwitting neighbor, he soon finds himself to be a liaison between Gatsby and Daisy.

With the watchful eyes of Dr. Eckleburg’s deteriorating billboard looming overhead, Nick narrates this tragic story of thwarted love, exposing how wealth, materialism, and decaying moral values corrupted the American dream amidst the opulence and dance parties of the 1920s.

When: October 23 at 7 p.m. and October 24 at 3 p.m.

Tickets: $7 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Meet Moody Spotlight

The Moody High School Spotlight Drama Club was founded in 2016 by a handful of dedicated students who approached Mr. Jonathan Hood, chemistry teacher and avid singer, about starting up a drama club.

2019’s student-directed production of The Wizard of Oz, which performed in February, saw a huge increase in the number of students auditioning.  More than 50 students are now involved in the Spotlight Drama Club at MHS working in performance roles and learning the technical aspects within the theatre such as costume design, set design, lighting design, and stage management.

In 2020, Moody Spotlight gained a new Sponsor, Lara Meeks, who has taught English and Theatre at Gardendale and Hewitt-Trussville, before making Moody High School her new home. With that, the members performed the classic, Steel Magnolias for their 2020 show. They are excited to continue with Spotlight and will be performing in the Fall and Spring this year for the 2021/2022 season. Be sure to mark your calendars this October as Moody High School Spotlight presents, The Great Gatsby.
