Spotlight Moody High

Steel Magnolias, March 2020

The Moody High School Spotlight Drama Club was founded in 2016 by a handful of dedicated students who approached Mr. Jonathan Hood, chemistry teacher and avid singer, about starting up a drama club. In the year of the club’s inception, they performed a musical revue titled “Theatre Through the Decades”, which received overwhelming support from parents and St. Clair County residents.

Following the success of this initial show, the club took an ambitious leap in deciding to tackle a full-scale production of Peter Pan, working on the production during after-school hours. The production of Peter Pan was an immediate success. Excitement about theatre exploded at Moody High School, resulting in the addition of two theatre classes being added to the curriculum and massive interest in getting involved.

2019’s student-directed production of The Wizard of Oz, which performed in February, saw a huge increase in the number of students auditioning.  More than 50 students are now involved in the Spotlight Drama Club at MHS working in performance roles and learning the technical aspects within the theatre such as costume design, set design, lighting design, and stage management.

In 2020, Moody Spotlight gained a new Sponsor, Lara Meeks, who has taught English and Theatre at Gardendale and Hewitt-Trussville, before making Moody High School her new home. With that, the members performed the classic, Steel Magnolias for their 2020 show. They are excited to continue with Spotlight and are looking forward to 2021’s upcoming productions.
